- Bipolar Disorder in Children and Adolescents:Advice for Parents
Bipolar disorder (manic depression) can have its onset in childhood.
Symptoms in young children can present differently than in adults and are
frequently mistaken for those of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD); therefore, the bipolar diagnosis is often missed. Children tend to
have less discreet episodes of mania and depression than adolescents or
adults. Often these children are irritable, explosive and excessively active.
